Read some advice on choosing a material and technology for attic insulation

When building a house, we look for the best solutions at every stage. Insulation is one of the key elements of the construction, deciding on operating costs and the quality and comfort of life in the new house. So what should we pay attention to when choosing a material and technology for attic insulation? And what advantages does polyurethane foam have?

When thinking about insulation, we rightly assume that good insulation means low energy consumption and therefore lower running costs. By focusing on costs, we often forget about the other benefit of effective insulation, which is coolness in summer and therefore greater living comfort. In this case, one of the key elements is good attic insulation. A well-insulated attic will keep the temperature lower on hot days and significantly improve the standard of living throughout the summer. So what determines the quality of insulation?

The main elements influencing the effectiveness of the insulation are the material, the airtightness, i.e. the technology used and the quality of the workmanship, as well as any changes in the insulation parameters over time.

What (and how) to insulate an attic well?

When choosing a material, attention should be paid to its insulating parameters and installation method. In terms of parameters, low thermal conductivity λ and low absorption will be key. When considering the choice of technology in terms of the method of installation, attention should be paid to whether it will tightly fill all insulated spaces and whether it can guarantee an installation that eliminates the formation of thermal bridges, i.e. places through which most heat escapes in winter or gets to most in summer.

One solution that brings all these elements together is spray Crossin polyurethane foam systems, which have all the features required of modern insulation materials. Crossin foams are a low thermal conductivity coefficient λ = 0.037,W/m2 and a very low absorption Wp = 0.85 kg/m2. From 2021, energy efficiency requirements for buildings, for roofs and flat roofs impose a thermal transmittance value of U = 0.15 W/(m2K). The use of Crossin Attic Soft foam at a thin insulation thickness of thickness of 25 cm, a U-value of 0.148 W/(m2K) can be achieved.

Another important feature of good insulation mentioned above is airtightness. The way in which the foam is applied ensures that the insulation is seamless, which, even in the case of complex constructions, 100% eliminates the possibility of possible thermal bridges appearing.

Polyurethane foam insulation for years to come

When building a house, we want the technologies used to perform well for the entire life of the house. The wrong choice of material or technology, and any mistakes made during installation, usually do not become apparent immediately, but only several years after the completion of the investment. This is where the advantages of Crossin insulation foams become apparent again. Spray-applied polyurethane foam bonds permanently to the substrate and is resistant to slipping and movement over the years without losing its insulating properties.

Cost of polyurethane foam insulation in the attic

Choosing the type of material during construction is also an economic calculation. The total cost of insulation is the cost of the material, the labour and the time it takes to complete. If you choose another quality insulation material and add the workmanship of a good installation team, you will often find that the price of Crossin polyurethane foam spraying is comparable or even lower. Regardless of the material selected, it is always best to entrust the installation to a proven specialist, and do not use price as the only criterion in making your decision. There are many companies on the market engaged in this type of activity, but not all have the necessary knowledge, equipment and experience.

When looking for a contractor, it is a good idea to look at whether the contractor in question works with one of the manufacturers and is certified accordingly. This is the case with insulation manufacturer Crossin. Crossin’s authorised contractors are constantly trained and monitored for quality.
